I cleaned out a bunch of clothes from my closet and dropped them off in one of those donation boxes. This was long over due. My closet is so much emptier now and I have about a million hangers now. Feels good to actually have room for the clothes that fit/I do wear.

Watching an NWSL game and saw Carly Wickenheiser. Looked her up and she’s the daughter of Doug. Doug and his family owned a nursery/greenhouse and ice cream place when I first moved to St. Peters.
I recently shaved my head. Like completely bald. Do you know what they don’t tell you before you do that? Putting on ball caps becomes a lot more difficult when you don’t have hair for the cap to glide over.
Dynamic ad insertion really kills sharing podcast clips from Overcast. The audio I clipped was no longer the audio I wanted because different length dynamic ad was inserted as it processed.
June 2026
I’ve been thinking about doing some web reorganization and rethinking the software I’m using. I kind of want to move away from Micro.blog and import the posts into Pure Blog. The problem with that is Micro.blog short posts don’t have titles, which are required for Pure Blog.
I haven’t played Starfox 64 in over 20 years. I picked up Starfox for the Switch 2 and played through the first mission. I remembered every single beat from the 64 version. So much nostalgia.
They really need to reissue E. 1999 Eternal on vinyl. It’s going for more than I’m willing to pay on Discogs.
Not great weather for flying a blimp in Saint Charles.
I’m really glad I got my M5 MacBook Air when I did.
I HAVE to buy this, right?
Now playing: The Smashing Pumpkins - Greatest Hits
I have a love of all things retro and baseball. Combine them and you get Ribbie. Ribbie allows you to watch MLB games rendered as 8bit pixel art pitch-by-pitch in real time.
The babies have taken flight. Here is one of them on a building away from the nest.
Now playing: Olivia Rodrigo - you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love
Saw one of the hawks today for the first time in a while. They aren’t completely gone.
I haven’t seen the two hawks or heard their babies in the nest in like a week. I think they’ve moved on. I hope they, or others, come back to nest again.
Rocky now has a spot next to Kurt Vonnegut.
If you want to add the US Men’s or Women’s National Teams to your calendar for the World Cup you can subscribe to them here.
Coax added Coax Weather. I love it.
I can retire now.
I have never felt more old than I do in this moment. I got excited for a 6:00 baseball start time while watching Hall and Oates reaction videos.
My series 9 Apple Watch is not supported in watchOS 27. I’ve been thinking about switching to a regular watch. This move might solidify that decision. Series 9 is not that old.
Closest I have ever gotten to this hawk.
Today’s soundtrack is Nate Dogg’s G Funk Classics Vol. 1 & 2.
Oh boy. Anghellic 25th anniversary on vinyl.
Game Changer on Dropout is so good. That show alone is worth the price of the subscription.
Check out Designed in California: An Apple history podcast by Jason Snell on Kickstarter. Can’t wait to listen.
Flight.
May 2026
Parachute rewrote their iCloud Photo backup engine and it seems like it is much slower now. I back up weekly with incremental backups and don’t take that many pictures (10 a week at most) and it still takes forever.
Comedy Bang Bang live tour episodes are back and I’m so excited.
I’m pretty sure this hawk is stalking me.
I may have to give Interstate 60 another watch. What a weird and fun movie.
There’s now an iOS version of Gnome, for your gif needs.
Perched and waddling.
I have the Cardinals on my TV, City in the Open Cup on my iPad, and I’m posting this from my laptop. Too many screens or not enough?
I played 2.5 hours of Forza Horizon 6 so far. I love it. My Xbox was really hot by the end of my session.
Buying a portable monitor and hooking up an Apple TV might have been the best thing I’ve done to my office. I can also hook it up to my servers if I need to for some reason.
Now playing: Kno - Death is Silent
I’ve been waiting for Indigo to come out for a while. It’s a great app for crossposting to Bluesky and Mastodon. I had been using Croissant for cross-posting, but it wasn’t a full client.
Do you need quick access to gifs in your menu bar? I do. That’s why I downloaded Gnome.
Project Hail Mary is out to rent our buy now. It’s very good. You should watch it.
George Carlin on comedians who punch down. Not much has changed since 1990.
Latest macOS and iOS updates seemed to have fixed a WiFi 7 issue. My two capable devices are now connecting via WiFi 7 instead of 6 (not that it matters, I don’t have multi-gig internet).
There’s a Game Changer: Home Edition game and you can back it on Kickstarter. There was a Smosh vs Dropout video where they played it. This looks like so much fun.
Nothing like some casual racism from a Schnucks employee while you’re shopping. I was walking down an aisle and an employee picks up two discarded flower arrangements and she blurts out, “if you can’t afford flowers for your baby momma don’t steal them.”
Watching me like a hawk.
I’m too old for west coast start times.
I’m at the age where I ordered new glasses and I’m really excited to get them. I’ve been wearing contacts for over 20 years. I’m tired of them.
Now playing: Kacey Musgraves - Middle of Nowhere.
The Cardinals radio broadcast commercials are awful. I really don’t want to hear Ricky Horton talking about masculinity. 🤮
The ducks had babies.
April 2026
I’m old now, so of course I like to listen to and identify birds on my walks with Spike. So far, I have 22 different species identified using the Merlin Bird ID app. This is just walking around my condo complex.
Tonight’s throwback movie is the mostly forgot about 2006 comedy starring Justin Long: Accepted 🍿
Testing out Parachute to backup iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive to an external SSD, that is then backed up to Backblaze.
The search in the mail app on iOS is broken. Searched for an email on my phone and it could not find it. Scroll through my email and find it just fine. Use the same search term on the Mac and it found it just fine too.
Please no more of this. I just want to watch the game.
Quality Control:
I still remember when I bought Jurassic 5’s album Quality Control. I had never heard of Jurassic 5 before, but it was the year 2000 and one of the things you did in the 90s and 2000s is look at the weekly ads to see what new music releases were coming out that week. This was prime CD era when …
Now playing: Jurassic 5 - Quality Control
My dad and I were talking about bad umpires and I could not remember Bucknor’s name for some reason. This is hilarious. First result when searching “bad umpire”.
Old blog imported into Pure Blog. Pretty quick and easy.
I knew WordPress had become bloated over the years. I didn’t realize how bad until I stared downloading and deleting all the files from an old, but up to date, site. I don’t think I’m going to regret replacing it with something much lighter.
I’ve been playing around with Pure Blog a bit. I may wind up using it on an old blog that I only keep up for archival purposes. There’s no need to keep WordPress running on a blog I never post to anymore. Or I could just delete the old blog.
Ducks and baby birds.
Using a bunch of the Artemis II photos as my wallpaper on rotation.
Now playing: Atmosphere - When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold
Went through some old pictures my grandma had. Found this throwback. I look like I should be headlining at Go Bananas in Cincinnati.
Bob Mortimer is so funny and his constant stumping of David Mitchell on Would I Lie to You is some of the best TV. Enjoy a compilation of Bob’s stories.
Now Playing: Masta Ace - A Long Hot Summer
If Disclosure Day happened in real life, I’m 100% certain that the people who enjoy running would turn out to be undercover aliens.
Now Playing: Oneirology by Cunninlynguists.
Me: Hey Siri, time for work (waits for scene to kick in). Siri: now playing Bullet by Hollywood Undead. Me:
Trying out Calendars as a Fantastical replacement. I was a user of the app a long time ago before it was subscription. Interested to see how the modern version will work for me.
I think I’m done with Fantastical. The widgets, which I rely on for meetings, never work anymore. I have a meeting in 15 minutes. You wouldn’t know that looking at my watch, which says No Items Today.
March 2026
There’s an old theater in St. Charles called the St. Andrews Theater. I’ve only seen one movie there, Curly Sue, some 35 years ago, when it was a dollar theater and before I lived in St. Charles. Discovered tonight it was an Arthur Theater at one point, which was the chain owned by my …
Flea apparently plays the trumpet and put out a jazz album. What is this world?
Red shouldered hawk.
Watched: Project Hail Mary 🍿. I really enjoyed this movie and I suspect there will be a lot of pets named Rocky soon.
This is in the “Shopping” section of stltoday.com. Gross.
It’s disappointing to see that Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight has a release date for all platforms except the Nintendo Switch 2.
Going to see Project Hail Mary tomorrow. I’m excited. I love Andy Weir’s books.
Every time I tried to sign up for STLToday I’m presented with an error. You’d think a failing business would want to do everything possible to make it easy for people to sign up and give them money.
You can import your Youtube subscriptions into Play and watch them directly in the app. This might be my new way to limit the amount of time I’m on Youtube and I can ignore the algorithm, Shorts, and Google’s constant changing of the subscription page.
Every single day for the past 4 days my dad has called or texted asking where the Cardinals opening day game will be shown. Every single time I tell him the Cardinals have not said yet. So annoying. Get your shit together, Cardinals.
Playing around with COAX some more. This is really promising. Really needs iCloud sync so you don’t have to configure the app (including the content) on each device. Can’t wait to see where this goes.
I just discovered Last One Laughing. Such a good show. The downside is it’s on Prime video and their app sucks so bad. It’s as slow as their dumb fire sticks.
Streaming services need a way to hide titles you have absolutely no interest in. I don’t need a giant splash screen taking up the entire interface for something I have no intention of watching. Let me dismiss it and don’t show it again. Looking at you, Peacock, with your carousel of …
I’m interested in checking out SNL UK. I think it’s supposed to be on Peacock tomorrow.
COAX looks pretty neat and may be an alternative if I ever decide to leave Channels.
I’m late to iPhone mirroring because I never had a Mac that supported it. What a handy feature.
The Shape of Paris starring Andy Anderson is a wonderful little short film showcasing the beauty of Paris with Anderson basically performing ballet on a skateboard.
Today, almost 15 months after my mom passed from cancer, we found out that my grandma has cancer and has weeks to live. She went to the ER for a fall and is now going straight into hospice. The last two years have sucked. Fuck cancer.
I really wish you could do system-wide multi-view on Apple TV. I’d love to have video from two different apps playing side by side.
For the longest time I used HyperDock on macOS. It hasn’t been updated for years and I never found a nice alternative. I recently discovered DockDoor and it looks like a pretty good replacement.
I purchased a new M5 MacBook Air and it arrived today. This thing is so nice. Of course, it’s replacing a 2015 MacBook Pro, so it’s quite a huge jump.
Harrison Ford is doing the best acting of his career on Shrinking.
Now playing: 2pac - Greatest Hits.
I’ve never played a Pokémon game. I picked up Pokémon Pokopia based on all the reviews. I’m really enjoying it. Might be this year’s Animal Crossing, not just because the similar gameplay, but also because of the amount of time I’m sure I’m going to be playing it.
Now playing: The Ting Tings - Home
I had no idea there was still an indoor soccer league. Furthermore, I had no idea the Ambush exists. How did I find this out? They are streaming their matches live on YouTube. Currently watching them play Baltimore.
February 2026
Apple removed the Sports navigation menu item from the TV app and now the page takes even longer to load. They really don’t want people to use it, I guess.
Looks like I will be cancelling HBO Max once Paramount takes over.
How did MLS not have opening day coverage all day and cameras at home crowd bars pumping up excitement for MLS openers? They really need to learn from other sports and make it a bigger deal. Get people excited.
What happened to that $19.99 a month subscription they announced for Cardinals.tv? You can still get the $99 a year price.
First City game of the season and first Cardinals Spring Training game tomorrow. I’m excited.
Wednesday, February 18, 2026 →
I don’t think the Cardinals will be good this year, but for the first time in a long time I’m optimistic about their future. I cannot wait for baseball to start back up.
I think Home by The Ting Tings will be my next vinyl purchase. Love the vibe of this album.
There’s no good media company, but I will absolutely cancel HBO Max if Paramount winds up the owner.
Haven’t been to Thai Gourmet in a long time. So good. I went with spice level 3 (out of 5) which may have been too much today.
Zach Reino, Jessica McKenna, and Paul F. Tompkins might be the best panel combo on Make Some Noise ever.
I enjoyed Is This Thing On?. Really good performances by Will Arnett and Laura Dern.
The writing on The Pitt is so good.
I never really cared for the Olympics when I was growing up. The older I get, the more I love them. I’ve had them on pretty much all day every day since they started.
Ever since I got my new phone in December, SMS message read state does not sync to my iPad or Mac mini. Annoying to have to go to those devices and delete them. Tried signing out of iCloud and syncing messages again with no luck.
Now playing: Ren - Demos (Do Not Share).
January 2026
Wow. This tale and these videos keep getting better. Ren - Vincent’s Tale - Starry Night.
Picked up dog food at Petco and a lady was yelling at an employee because the store was selling a python. “Don’t you know those kill people. They come from another continent.” It was less than a foot long.
Someone needs to make a documentary about the evolution of beatboxing. It’s crazy how much the art has changed in such a short time, from Doug E. Fresh to Rahzel to modern beatboxers like Wing or Improver.
Now Playing: Ren Vincent’s Tale.
Apparently, Digg is back.
New Ren dropped: Vincent’s Tale - The Bedroom.
Linux Mint 22.3 has been released. Already upgraded my Mintbook.
It’s 2026. If your restaurant doesn’t have a website what are you even doing? Double WTF is if your only web presence is a Facebook page that doesn’t even have a menu. Do you want business?
MTV Rewind is pretty amazing. It would be pretty cool to integrate something like this into my Channels setup.
If you look at my YouTube algorithm, you’d see Computer Chronicles videos popping up all the time. Great time capsules. Stewart Cheifet has passed. This is sad.
I do not need more hats. I do not need more hats. I do not need more hats.
I’m excited about Kumail Nanjiani being on the next season of Taskmaster.
I just realized my first blog post that I still have record of (I think I had a Blogger blog that I never imported into WordPress) was in October of 2004. I’m old. I still remember using WordPress 0.7.
Starting a new blog with longer posts about my experimentation with self-hosting, open source, gaming, Linux, gadgets, and general technology. Welcome to my Home Lab. Feel free to subscribe if you’re at all interested.

Trying to set up a new blog on Micro.blog for some longer form posts for a new project. Also testing out Ghost in a Pika Pod. So far, Ghost is winning. The post I made on the new Micro.blog site isn’t showing up. There’s something weird going on with it. Emailed Help. We’ll see …

I’m working on some website stuff this evening. Playing with some HTML and CSS converting one site and then playing around with Ghost for another site. I haven’t done web work in a long time and I’m really rusty.
Installed Immich on a PikaPod as a backup for all my photos. The downside to being in the Apple ecosystem is what could happen if something goes wrong.
99% of the times I launch the camera app using the camera control button is on accident. Finally disabled the button completely.
Ethan Hawke’s best performance of his already great career. Watched: Blue Moon 🍿
The Christmas gift for my dad, made by my cousin’s husband, using an actual Jack Daniel’s barrel.
I never knew I needed a Cake Christmas album until I saw this ‘Twas the Distance parody.
I have a 2012 Mac Mini that was my media server. I have a newer mini PC handling that now. I’m thinking about installing Linux on the Mac Mini while I have some time off later this week but not sure what I’d use it for yet.
Kumail Nanjiani’s new special Night Thoughs, on Hulu, is great. I’m glad he’s back to doing some standup.

Updated the firmware on my Meshtastic radio today. New firmware is nice and updating the Heltec v3 was a breeze. I’m hearing the v4 firmware updates are a pain.
I really enjoyed Wake Up Dead Man.
I did enjoy playing with other Linux distros, especially Zorin 18, but it’s nice to be back to the stability and performance of Linux Mint. Fedora Plasma was the worst. Of course, it could be the hardware I was running it on, but it was really slow and buggy. Plasma would crash constantly on …
Just installed iOS 26.2 and already had one springboard crash.

FYI, if you’re an Apple One Premier subscriber you can get Peacock Premium Plus for the price of Premium when you subscribe through the Apple TV app.
Picked up a Dream Router 7 during the Black Friday sale. So far, I love this thing. So much geeky stuff to play with. Also upgraded the OS on my Pi Hole and set it up from scratch. Set up conditional forwarding so I can get device names too. Last step was setting up Tailscale to use the Pi Hole too.
Fedora KDE Plasma was not for me. Decided to go back to the trusty Mint for now. Zorin 18 had too many bugs that were annoying me.
My top podcasts of 2025. No surprises here.
November 2025
I decided to give Fedora KDE Plasma a chance. Wiped my Zorin OS install and am test driving the latest Fedora for a bit. You can customize so much more in KDE than Gnome.
I was excited to see the Taildrop feature in Tailscale until I saw that you have to use the command line on Linux to use it. I’ll stick with LocalSend until Tailscale develops a GUI for Linux (it may never happen).
I’m officially at the “Adjust the screen resolution on your laptop” age.
30 years. Feel old yet?
I picked up a new phone today. T-Mobile, in their infinite wisdom, thinks it’s a smart idea to text the phone number you’re activating in order to approve the activation. What a cluster fuck that was.
The YouTube app just started downloading videos without me asking. I have never used the feature. I never watch without internet access. Had to drill into setting to turn off settings that were turned on by default including auto downloading suggested content.

The YouTube iPad app keeps getting worse. Now, navigation buttons don’t even work half the time. Click Home, nothing happens. Click Shorts, a short’s audio start playing but black screen. Have to force quit the app.
I’m only one episode in and I can already say Michael Shannon will win an Emmy for Death By Lightning.
Attempting to upgrade the OS on my Raspberry Pi. I’ve never done this before. Hopefully Pi Hole and Unbound come out fine on the other side.
I finally found a good use for AI.
The first two episodes of Pluribus were very good. I cannot wait to see where this show goes.
Die My Love had great performances but little else.
Watching: Die My Love 🍿
This cover of Alabama Shakes’ Hold On by The Big Push is so good.
This is the second time since I’ve installed Zorin that the OS thinks I only have 9% battery left (it’s really 99% and fully charged). The system even says fully charged, but also reads 9%. If I unplug, it warns me that battery is low. Rebooting takes it back to 99%.
Playing around with the Zen browser again after not using it for a while. I think I may make it the default on my Zorin laptop for a while. I love that it uses Firefox’s engine and I can sign into my Firefox account and sync everything I need to.
I wish my local NPR station, St. Louis Public Radio, would add RSS feeds for their news articles.
7Up Shirley Temple may be my new favorite soda.

Currently reading: Only God Can Judge Me by Jeff Pearlman 📚
Now playing: The Big Push - An Englishman in New York from the album Busking Sessions.
One thing that channels does better than any other media server is the Virtual Channels feature. The problem is, other features rarely work with it. Can’t add streamlinked content to virtual channels. Can’t use Virtual Channels in the new multiview (or any personal media). So many …
Channels had a pretty nice update. The multi-view is pretty looking. Unfortunately, it only works with live TV sources. My dreams of watching live sports, Seinfeld, Saved by the Bell, and Field of Dreams all at the same time will have to wait. I did get some sports channels added via EPlusTV though.
No rap songs are in Billboard’s top 40 for the first time since 1990. Now is ska’s chance to strike. The children yearn for ska.
My media server is a mini PC that runs Windows 11. My laptop is an old Macbook Pro that runs Linux (currently Zorin OS), I have a Raspberry Pi running Unbound and Pi-hole and a Mac Mini and my work machine is a Macbook Pro. The worst system to maintain updates on, by far, is the Windows 11 machine.
I found one weird oddity on Zorin so far. I installed Firefox (because fuck Brave) and it defaulted to the flatpak version. The flatpak app was having issues connecting to local sites. Installing the system package resolved that issue. Strange.
Zorin OS 18 installed.
The new version of Zorin OS looks pretty nice. Just gave it a spin on a bootable USB. Might be replacing Mint this weekend.
I’ve read so many biographies about Tupac. Time to add another one to my list with Only God Can Judge Me.
Crafty people are no joke. Whenever I drive by Michael’s right before they’re about to open, there’s always people waiting.
I have all sharing of info disabled in Docker Desktop but a recent update isn’t respecting it. The top 2 blocked domains on my network by requests are from Docker.
I didn’t think it was possible, but the TV app is even worse at updating Sports in TV OS 26 than it was previously.
Watched: Weapons 🍿. Did not like this as much as Barbarian.
I wish Forza was available on the Switch 2.
Blippo+ is now on the Switch. I loved this weird “game” on the PlayDate.

I don’t think there has ever been a time where I’ve used 1Password on Windows and it didn’t completely shit the bed in one way or another.
Hackers was released 30 years ago today. You should watch it. It’s dumb and fun.
Today’s reminder that I’m old is that Saved by the Bell: The College Years premiered 32 years ago today.
Teen Wolf (1985) just came on my Sports channel. I don’t care what anyone says, that movie is fun.
August 2025
Installed the iOS and iPadOS 26 public betas. The design change isn’t as drastic as podcasters make it out to be. Can’t wait to really get into multitasking on iPadOS.
Now playing: Billy Joel - Greatest Hits Volume I & Volume II.
I turned the AC off when I woke up this morning. It’s been so nice having the windows open again. Someone has a fire going in their fireplace. Love the smell of a wood-burning fire.
Meshtastic has been fun to play with. I want to get a couple more radios over the next few months. Also connected with MeshStL.
Me: Why does my dog have so many allergies? My Dog: I’m going to sniff this same spot for 5 minutes with my nose fully pressed to the dirt. Then I’m going to do that 20 more times on a 10 minute walk.
I got a meshtastic radio today and have been playing around with it. I’ve picked up 10 nodes near me. Not sure what to do next.
My dog had a vet appointment today for his annual check-up/shots. He got 4 shots today and poor guy is feeling it.
Overcast has been pretty bad for a long time. I’m not in love with Pocketcasts because it has a lot of issues too. I would really consider Apple Podcasts if they actually allowed import and export of .opml files.
July 2025
Part 2 of Vincent’s Tale, Self Portrait, is up now. Can’t wait to see where this goes.
I saw Superman with my dad this weekend. I really enjoyed it. While there I realized it was the first time I was in a movie theater since COVID. I used to see 2-3 a month.
If Taylor Swift’s Shake it Off Was an Emo Anthem is another perfect cover by Alex Melton.
I never noticed this before but apparently iOS can recognize your dog breed.
I cannot wait for Vincent’s Tale. Sunflowers (Prologue) has me really excited. The word genius gets thrown around with artists a lot but there may be a legitimate case when you look at what Ren has been doing the last few years.
I’ve been playing around with Stream Link Manager for Channels and it seems to work pretty well. The interface is a little confusing. I haven’t been able to get it to launch HBO programming yet. Probably because their app sucks. Hulu and Apple TV+ work fine.
My current desktop on my Mintbook.
It’s nice to see that baseball fans continue to have taste and hate Pat McAfee as much as every other sport besides football does.
I would watch a tv show of Jason Mantzoukas teaching Stevie Martin how to drive.
I complain about Apple updates taking forever to install but nothing is worse than an Intel graphics update on a Windows machine.
Today’s soundtrack is Dropkick Murphys - For the People.
Today’s soundtrack: Tech N9ne - 5816 Forest
June 2025
Now playing:
James Acaster is always so good on Seth Meyers.
I really enjoyed Sinners.
This season of Taskmaster is so good. If you’re not watching it, you should be.
I’m actually excited about some of the iOS and iPadOS changes coming this fall, especially the multitasking and window management changes in iPadOS. Can’t wait to see the design changes for myself.
I should count the number of times the Fan Duel Sports app crashes during a Cardinals game. So far, it’s 2 and we’re less than an hour in.
At the doctor to get blood pressure medicine refilled. Just like every appointment with Mercy, they are late. Not being on time is one of my biggest pet peeves, causing my blood pressure to rise, hence why I’m here to start with.
The Switch 2 is much heavier than the OLED Switch. The build quality feels so much better. Bigger joycons are great, but I can’t wait for my Pro controller to get here.
Happy Switch 2 day to all those that celebrate.
May 2025
Now playing: Atmosphere - Triple X Years in the Game.
I can honestly say I no longer find joy in watching St. Louis City SC play. I will still watch them, but there’s nothing joyous about it. They are such a frustrating team with a beyond frustrating coaching staff.
I’ve been playing around with blot for a couple of sites now that they have iCloud Drive support. I really love the simplicity of just adding files to a folder to make a new post/page/etc.
My FreshRSS install broke today. Couldn’t figure out why based on the error log. I decided to export my OPML, which still worked, and nuke he install. Fresh install still fails with same error. Something must have changed on server. Don’t care enough to fix right now. Back to Feedbin.
Baseball buddies.
Nice day for a ball game.
My dog’s medicine arrived in St. Louis, where I live, but is now somehow in Chicago. Fun.
April 2025
New toy.
I tried preordering a Switch 2 for about 10 minutes before I gave up. Hopefully, I can get one through Nintendo, but not counting on it.
Blot now supports iCloud. This makes it very interesting for me. So tempted to try it out.
Dropout would be the perfect home for an American Taskmaster if they ever do one again.
There needs to be “wooo” filters on sports broadcasts. I’ll take the wave over those idiots any day.
I’ve been surprised by the Cardinals offense so far this season but something needs to be done about their pitching.
I complain about macOS updates taking forever but nothing compares to how long Intel graphics drivers take to install on Windows.
How does Librewolf, which is based on Firefox, not offer an importer for Firefox?
The new Share feature in Callsheet is pretty awesome. You can link directly to movies or episodes, like The Marine Biologist episode of Seinfeld that I’m currently watching.
March 2025
I would love to spend 30 minutes with the PM in charge of the MLB at Bat app so I can show them everything wrong with it. 30 minutes might not be enough.
Seeing my dog get scared by his own farts will never get old.
Opening Day is Thursday which means my movie playlist for the week is going to consist of baseball movies. The Sandlot, Field of Dreams, Major League 1 and 2, 8 Men Out, 61*, 42.
Now playing: Elton John - Diamonds
A new Redman ft Method Man song and new Wu-Tang Clan song? My old-ass is happy.
There’s a Step by Step rewatch podcast (because of course there is) with the actors that played Dana and Al. I may be addicted to it.
Now Playing: Huey Lewis and The News - Collected.
There are just some universal truths in life. The sky is blue, grass is green, and Inter Miami are the biggest bunch of crybabies.
First bike ride of the season under my belt. A short and easy 5 mile route and my legs feel like jelly. I love it.
If you feel guilty about having garlic cheese bread for dinner, just think of it as an open-faced grilled cheese sandwich.
February 2025
Now playing Vampire Weekend.
I need some kind of audio plugin that adds fake AM radio static to Cardinals streaming radio broadcasts.
Listening to baseball on the radio and looking forward to City playing tonight. So glad winter is almost over.
I accidentally open live activities when swiping them away more than I intentionally open live activities.
I’ve been using Pocket Casts for a bit because of playback issues in Overcast. I thought it was temporary, but Pocket Casts’ search may have won me over. So much better than Overcast.
All of these 50th Anniversary specials for SNL really has me feeling nostalgic for my childhood. So many good memories of watching SNL with my family.
Playing around with Zen Browser. I like that it’s based on Firefox and not Chromium.
I’m enjoying the new theme I set up on my Mintbook.
I’ve been playing with Tapestry. I have one timeline set up for my social accounts and one set up for RSS feeds. I think I like it. I may set another timeline for YouTube feeds.
January 2025
Incubus is touring and playing Morning View in its entirety. That is tempting. Really, really tempting.
I used to give Spectrum a lot of crap, but I really can’t complain about these speeds anymore.
After ignoring a drive app for Linux, praising fascists, and now expanding to the grifter side of the internet with Bitcoin, I think it’s definitely time to ditch Proton.
With Andy Yen licking Trump’s boots, time to move away from Proton. Where should I go for VPN?
City better be good this year or I’m going to be really depressed with my sports. The Blues are playing like crap and we all know the Cardinals are going to suck.
Watched the first episode of The Pitt. It’s so nice having Noah Wyle back on TV as a doctor.
Yesterday, my water heater went out, I had issues with my heat (thankfully, an HVAC person was able to come out today) and tonight my dog threw up three times. I’m ready for the weekend already and I haven’t even started the week.
My hot water heater went out. The cold shower I took today was not fun. Will be showering at my dad’s for the next few days. Couldn’t get someone out until Thursday afternoon.
Nice, you can mount your Office 365 One Drive files in Linux now just by signing in on Online Accounts. It’s not a OneDrive client, but better than nothing (looking at you, Proton Drive).
I don’t know that my personal Office subscription on is worth a $30 price increase. I really don’t use it and definitely won’t use whatever AI garbage they add.
Drupal CMS 1.0 looks like it could be a good replacement for Wordpress if I need to move some sites because of the Wordpress drama.
Went to my parents’ house for the first time since my mom died last week. It was hard. My dad is doing okay, but it’s still really hard on him. I catch myself thinking about telling my mom something next time I see her at least once a day before I remember she’s gone.
Instead of troubleshooting the iCloud on Windows thing on my own for multiple days, I should have just called them. 5 minutes on the phone with them and it’s resolved. Problem was I was signing in with the icloud.com domain but my original Apple ID is a me.com domain.
I’ve tried every single suggestion the internet has provided to get iCloud Drive and iCloud Photos to work on my Windows 11 machine. I think I’ve given up at this point. How does Apple even release this?
At this point, it’s really embarrassing that Proton does not have a Drive app for Linux. Doesn’t look like it’s even on the roadmap for 2025.

I watched Saturday Night last night. I really liked it. I would watch a mini series about that first year at SNL.
I cannot get Windows shares working for some reason. I often need to share files across the network and across Windows, Linux, and macOS. Discovered LocalSend. Or should I say rediscovered. Apparently, I downloaded it at some point a long time ago.
I can understand why Windows users hate Apple. Have you ever tried getting iCloud Drive or Photos to work on Windows 11? I have never gotten past the Initializing state.
In September, my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer that spread to her liver. It was her birthday. At 8:58 tonight I said goodbye to my mom. She was the best mom. I can’t imagine the rest of my life without her in it. There will be a big hole.

Testing out Spark as my primary email app on iOS and iPadOS. I used it a long time ago but dont remember why I stopped. So far, I’m getting new emails instantly. Mail.app would be so delayed despite having push enabled.
Ordered some new vinyl. Taylor Swift, Gracie Abrams, Chappell Roan and Dr. Dre. One of these things is not like the other.
A Taskmaster New Years Treat? Please and thank you.
The iOS Mail app barely works these days. Maybe it’s time to look at alternative apps again. What are the best mail apps now? Need imap and, unfortunately, gmail support.
While waiting forever in an Apple Store I’m going to start taking iPhones off their stands to see how long it takes another employee to fix. First one lasted 2 minutes.
You know when you purchase something and instantly know you’re old?
Upgraded my phone (on Apple’s annual upgrade program) in person at the Apple Store today. That was a mistake. I somehow still have my old phone and will need to eventually drive all the way back there to return it because the moron helping me had no idea what he was doing.
Finally catching up on season 2 of Shrinking. I really think this might be the best show on tv with the best ensemble cast.
The mail app in iOS and iPadOS keeps getting worse but, unfortunately, it’s still the best for my needs. I just wish it updated reliably.
I have a package that has entered the black hole that is the USPS St. Louis Distribution Center. Let’s see how many days it is held there.
That new Noah Wyle show The Pitt looks like a modern ER and I’m here for it.
Seems like all the St. Louis area Smashburgers are “temporarily closed.” I wonder what’s going on. I’ll miss their Scorchin’ Hot Fries.
November 2024
Spectrum increased my upload speeds. By a lot.
I ordered a base model M4 Mac Mini to replace my 2012 Mac Mini. Education discount plus $140 in Apple gift cards made it a no-brainer. It’s supposed to arrive today. Cannot wait to try out an M-series chip for the first time on a Mac.
I laid down in bed over lunch. My dog went under the covers. Guess who is back to work and guess who is still sleeping under the covers.

I’ve been playing a lot of Forza Horizon 5 and I had to buy the Universal Icons Car Pack. The DeLorean is slow as hell but fun to drive around in. You have to be going straight and slightly downhill in order to get it up to 90 mph. When it hits 88, it lights up.

I listen to a lot of podcasts. Well, a lot of hours anyway.
Happy to see a nice crowd at the USMNT game vs Jamaica at City Park, especially considering the weather.
Rewatching game 4 of the 2006 World Series.
Seems like Blot might be dead. That’s a shame because the idea is great.
Video quality on Micro.blog uploads is awful. It’s 2024 with video looking like 2004.
I’ve curated a pretty good list of comfort tv channels using both Pluto TV and my own media via virtual channels. A lot going on right now. This helps.

The Murder Mystery episode of Saved by the Bell is the best episode. I will not debate this.

Please make this happen. Jayson Tatum and others back WNBA bid for St. Louis.
Warriors, come out to play.
Watching the Yankees lose the World Series was fun. The fact that they lost while looking like a little league team was priceless.
I’d say 2 out of 5 times I hit Play in Overcast to resume playing, nothing happens. The button turns to Pause but no audio plays. Force quitting the app fixes it until the next time.
Sorry, New York, Ice Cube is better than Fat Joe.
Now playing: The Smashing Pumpkins - Greatest Hits
A Warriors concept album from Lin-Manuel Miranda? Sure, why not.
The WordPress drama is crazy, but not at all surprising.
The 4K feed of the MLB playoffs is crisp. Sure would be nice if MLS season pass had 4K.
This afternoon’s record is Deltron 3030.
I’ve never watched The Jetsons as an adult. I do not recommend it. I was scanning antenna channels and found a channel showing it so I turned it on. The entire episode is about Jane getting her license and about how bad lady drivers are. Wow.

A hawk chased a bird to my balcony. The bird hit the wood with a thud so loud that it sounded like a gunshot. I look down it looked like a crime scene. Dead bird with a puddle of blood forming under its head. Hawk watched me clean it up from the garage roof.
1Password has really turned into an app I loathe. What a downfall for a once great app. If it wasn’t for my work, I’d happily leave it forever.

Woke up to a new Cunninlynguists song, Forever. What a great surprise.

On iOS, you can set Tailscale to automatically turn on when you leave your WiFi network. This allows me to still use Pi-hole away from home.
I’m not sure what the micro.blog integration in Reeder. does. I added my account but nothing shows under it.

Ordered Jack in the Box for the first time in a long time today. Ordered via the app. Show up and there’s signs on the door saying they won’t open until 4. Now I remember why I don’t go to Jack in the Box. Will I ever get refunded? We’ll see.
A St. Louis icon died. RIP Ted Drewes, Jr.

I’m so excited Paul F. Tompkins is in season 2 of Very Importantant People.
Breaking is my new favorite Olympic sport. Love to see how far the culture has come.
I don’t understand all the hate for the new version of Overcast. I have a couple of minor quibbles, but I think it’s a good update. That being said, Marco’s attitude towards customers in the last couple of ATP episodes feels quite dismissive and condescending.

I’m pretty sure the Olympics are gaslighting us. There can’t possibly be that many tennis events yet that’s all that is ever on.
Instagram served me an ad for a $19,000 record player console. They are wildly overestimating my spare income. I can’t think of a single other thing in my house that costs that much.
There’s a Batman serial from 1943. Every 15 minute episode revolves around Batman and Robin being horribly outmatched and losing in a fight. They haven’t won a fight yet. No Bat gadgets. Not event a grappling hook. I haven’t made it to the end yet.

Watching the 1985 NLCS Ozzie Smith walk off home run game. I love being able to revisit these old games.

This St. Louis City SC team just looks lost.

I smashed my index finger in my front door on the day of the Kentucky Derby. It has still not healed. The nail is close to finally falling off. Hopefully it will be off within the next week.
I love finding weird, old records.
Overcast has been forgetting my play position a lot recently. So annoying to constantly relisten to parts of podcasts because it can’t “remember” accurately.
I just saw a grown man wearing a coonskin cap.
St. Louis City SC fired Carnell. Meanwhile, the Cardinals’ front office is like, “Wait, you can do that?”

The Rickwood game last night was something special. More of this MLB.
The new dark mode in Microsoft Teams is awful. Blurry light grey everywhere.

I do not do math enough in my daily life in which I would use Math Notes, but damn is that a cool feature of the calculator app in iPadOS.
I think it’s hilarious that every league with a Fanatics deal has “A Fanatics Experience” on their store as if that’s a selling point and not a warning. How long before they try rebranding a la Comcast or Charter? If I see Fanatics on the store I immediately know it’s shit quality and to not buy.

Each new day brings a new Qdoba email despite unsubscribing the day before. What a time to be alive.
On this date in 1922, the Cubs and Cardinals traded outfielders between games of a doubleheader and both played each game, one for each team. Cardinals got Max Flack for Cliff Heathcote.
I love seeing all the Angel Hernandez memes circulating since his retirement was announced. My favorite is “he finally got the right call.”

The Chiefs’ billionaire owners, who just asked the citizens of Kansas City to fund a new stadium, are doubling down on bigotry. Cool.
“Apple refuses to do cellular Macs.” I listen to a lot of tech podcasts, pretty much all of them focused on Apple tech and Marco is literally the only one that continues to bang this drum on ATP. Apple “refuses” to do it because it’s more likely very few people care.
Old guy outside yelling into his phone, “Siri, who is Caitlin Clark’s team playing tonight?” Siri didn’t know but I love that he asked.
New hat. Hey Nong Man.
The new HomePod Mini I’m setting up for my mom is on iOS 15.6. How long ago was this thing manufactured?
The Cardinals are a disaster. Can’t wait to see the response to their streaming option next year. Who would want to watch?
You know what would be absolutely wonderful? If I didn’t have to sign into Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, multiple times per day, sometimes per hour, because Microsoft can’t figure their shit out.
The Cardinals subreddit has a bunch of posts about the North American bird and not the baseball team right now and I salute them.
It’s obvious the St. Louis Cardinals organization doesn’t care about winning. If they did, they wouldn’t have let this go on for so long and get this bad. This is a continuation of years of decline. If ownership has given up on the team, so have I.
I could watch Ethan and Maya Hawke talk about movies all day.
My plate is pretty empty right now.
New album arrived today. Now playing Ren - Sick Boi.
If Apple really wants the TV app to be a success, they really need to do something about stale data. Too many times I’ve gone to Sports to see games that were played yesterday as Live.

Today’s album is Third Eye Blind’s A Collection.
Every baseball team should have a player on the roster they only put in to argue with, and get thrown out by, Angel Hernandez. Awards at the end of the season for best ejection antics.

I was making tacos and put some shredded cheese on the floor for Spike. For the next week he will go check out that spot just in case cheese magically appears again.
As someone who has recently joined a new team (well, actually, rejoined an old team that has all new processes), I’m going to start keeping a WTF Notebook. This is such a great idea, I wish I would have thought about it months ago. Never too late to start.
There’s smart, and then there’s NASA engineer smart and a code change that traveled over 15 billion miles in over 22 hours. NASA’s Voyager 1 Resumes Sending Updates to Earth.

Watching Detroit play Tampa Bay and listening to the Detroit broadcast team talk about how the Cardinals are struggling so bad offensively this season. Embarrassing.
Trying out FreshRSS on a PikaPod since i cannot figure out how to get auto-refreshing work with my shared hosting’s cron tab. Downside is PikaPods only refresh twice an hour. Still waiting to see if it actually works.
Remember when it was fun to watch Cardinals baseball?
Vinyl has arrived.
Playing with a new toy.
Played around with Zorin OS and really liked it. Booted from a USB stick and played around for a bit. Very modern UI. Maybe I will find some time and replace Mint on my Mintbook.
I’m really enjoying the new Taylor Swift and Pearl Jam albums. Can’t wait for my TS vinyl.
Another classic game for the DVR.
Merry Swiftmas!
Apple TV notified me of Chelsea’s goal before USA Network video feed showed it. Time to turn off notifications.
I just saw a cyber truck for the first time in real life on my morning walk. I can’t believe people are actually buying that thing.
My dad replaced his ancient iPad Air 2 with a new iPad 10th Generation thanks to Best Buy’s $100 off sale this weekend. I can’t believe he was still using it because it was originally my mom’s and she gave it to him when it was getting too slow for her.
25 minute bike ride to start the day before it gets too hot. The wind gusts made going up some of the larger hills challenging but the extra push going down was fun.
It’s a good week for Angel Hernandez and the integrity of umpires.
NWSL, Blues, and Cardinals tonight. Busy sports night for me.
I’ll have had my router for a week now and not one disconnect. Speed seems improved in almost all cases as well.
Do I like the Royals? No. Do I like when the Royals score 9 against Houston in the first inning? Absolutely.

I was looking for an easy way to sync Google Drive and/or OneDrive to my Mintbook and found Insync. It kind of sucks that it’s $40 per account, but it seems to work pretty well so far. Going to give it the full 7 day trial.

Ben Stiller’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is an underrated movie. 🍿

My most watched virtual channel in Channels has to be my Seinfeld channel. The Van Buren Boys strike again.

If you delete a message in Messages without reading it, the notification on other iOS devices does not go away. If you permanently delete the messages it still doesn’t go away. I guess my iPad is stuck with a notification badge forever now. Good job, Apple.
Baseball season is back. I cannot wait to be extremely disappointed in the ball club the Cardinals put together this year.

I just backed How Comics Were Made: a Visual History of Printing Cartoons on Kickstarter. History of print media is so fascinating.
MLS continues to embarrass itself with its handling of the referee lockout.
Definitely recording this.
Maybe Don Garber is a genius and playing the long game. He’s going to use all the money collected from fines from players and coaches complaining and use that to pay the real refs, right?
FYI: if you’re interested in NWSL games that air on Ion and not sure how to watch, Ion is available on Pluto.tv.
It’s a bummer that MLS and NWSL games are on at the same time. I only have so many screens.
Me: Siri, play the album Sick Boi by Ren. Siri: ok, here’s some shitty remixes EP by a shitty group called The Chainsmokers. How does Apple keep getting worse at this?

I love that there’s a classic MLB games channel on Pluto. I’m watching game 7 of the 1987 NLCS for the first time.
Quadbox going on for MLS tonight.
What’s with all the empty seats in Columbus and LAFC stadiums today? Opening day of MLS should not have that many empty seats.
Noel Fielding is on a new Apple TV show and if that wasn’t enough to sell me, the title is The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin.
Apple’s System Status page is such a waste. It’s never accurate. I don’t know why I still bother checking it, but I’m not going to Twitter to find out what’s going on.
The downside to every professional sports league using Fanatics for merchandise is that it’s all crap. The upside is I’m no longer spending money on sports apparel because Fanatics is crap.
I created a Sports Movies virtual channel in Channels and Blue Chips is on. That is such a good movie.
My mouse died and I had to charge it in the middle of a meeting. I love my mouse, but hate how it charges. (Thanks, Apple).
I’m so excited for MLS to start back.
I migrated my media servers off my 2012 Mac Mini and onto a cheap Windows 11 mini pc. The migration was relatively smooth. I did have to manually tag a bunch of TV shows in Channels for some reason. I’m not sure why that data didn’t come over in the backup.

iCloud Keychain using over 800mb of memory on a Windows machine that doesn’t have passwords and Keychain sync turned on. Fun.

I was planning on using my old Magic Keyboard that’s plugged into my Mac Mini as a backup until a new keyboard arrives on Wednesday. I unplugged it from the Mini and saw that the back had popped off from an expanded battery. Fun.

It’s Not TV, It’s Shepflix: Whenever the real world would get too overwhelming, I retreat into a hole of comfort television. When there’s so much bad going on in the world at a non-stop pace, bouncing around streaming services looking for comfort TV wasn’t doing the job anymore. So what did I do? I created my own cable network …
I’m about to cancel YouTube premium because of how shitty the app is now. I can’t ever launch the app without it thinking I want to continue watching a video that I watched a week ago.
I’ve never watched much Gordon Ramsay but his Last Meal episode was fantastic.
The Cardinals are going to to have a really shitty season again this year. I really hope attendance is down.
I’ve been using Apple Arcade quite a bit recently. Do you know what’s pretty awesome? Starting a game on my phone then picking up a controller and playing on an iPad or Apple TV. That makes it so much easier to find time to play.
All four seasons of Evening Shade are on Prime if you want to binge them before the ads kick in at the end of the month.
The Scarface Tiny Desk Concert is superb. 🎵
All week I’ve been excited about the upcoming three-day weekend for MLK, Jr. Day. It’s not this weekend, it’s next weekend.

I wonder how far back MLB’s audio archives go. They could do a podcast where each episode is a radio broadcast of a famous game in MLB history. I’d subscribe. I also subscribe to Sleep Baseball, so what do I know?

My Dreams of Cardinals Streaming May Never Come True: But Diamond is said to currently only carry the digital rights to five of those teams: the Tigers, Royals, Marlins, Brewers and Rays. Therefore, even if Diamond and Amazon do wind up with a court-approved arrangement, Diamond could not stream games via Amazon for any of its other MLB teams beyond …

I have a package, coming via USPS, that was supposed to be delivered on the 18th. There hasn’t been any updates to the tracking, other than saying it’s late. It has been “in transit to next facility” since the 14th.
I don’t forget my wallet often, but when I do I’m so glad most places accept Apple Pay. That saved me a trip home from the grocery store and back during a really busy time.
It’s crazy to me that I’m already seeing posts for MLS preseason. The season just ended. I’m excited, though.
The Athletic is now available to Apple News+ subscribers. Hopefully this means I can cancel my standalone subscription.
Watching the Monk movie on a Saturday night and I’m excited. I’m an old now.
I got tickets to see Brett Goldstein at the Fox. Excited.

With the Blues off to another rough start and the Cardinals doing Cardinals things this off season, It’ll be a tough 2024. Let’s hope St. Louis City SC doesn’t suffer from a sophomore slump. I need something to look forward to.
Some rough news from Kelly Chase. Wish him the best in his biggest fight.
Slowly building my own tv service. There are still some must-haves that I need to add, but it’s a good start.
Has anyone used Porkbun’s web hosting? I’m not looking to move yet, but my current plan ends early next year.

My experiment with the Podcasts app may be coming to an end sooner than expected. It doesn’t look like the search functionality works with private podcast feeds, making it impossible to search for episodes in the private feeds.
Conducting an experiment in which I replace Overcast with the default Podcasts app. The biggest pain so far is no feed import to Podcasts.

I discovered a weird iOS/Messages bug. If you delete an unread message from the Messages app on one device you’ll still have a badge on other devices with no way to remove it unless you restore the deleted message and mark it as read.
By the way, if you hate what Amazon did to Comixology, maybe check out Omnibus for your indie comics needs.
I quit using Comixology when they moved the store to Amazon and you could no longer find anything. Not surprising that the app is now shutting down for the far inferior Kindle app.
I love when Corridor Crew finds scenes in older movies that uses long forgotten technology that has since been replaced by traditional CGI. So fascinating.
These dudes are just nerds that never stopped cosplaying. It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad.
I’m doing a Psych rewatch and I forgot how good the writing on this show was. The jokes are so good.

So Long, Waino: To me that says it all about the journey I’ve been on as a Cardinal. I started as this young guy who got sent home … because he just wasn’t ready. Then I became a World Series champ … good arm, pitched well, barely knew a thing. Then I became a champ again … but so much …

“New” Teams sucks so bad. One coworker can’t receive Teams calls because it just forwards to her voicemail. Earlier, it wouldn’t take me out of “Presenting” mode after a call ended until I restarted the app. What a joke.
If Apple is going to sell a brand new device that only charges to 80% by default to “optimize battery life”, then their battery claims are complete bullshit and their numbers should be based on that 80%. Side note, it’s 9:30 AM and my brand new Watch series 9 charge is already at …

I’m having fun playing with the virtual channels feature in Channels. I’m basically recreating the cable of my youth.
I’ve been playing with Channels for my TV/DVR needs. It’s a neat server/app combo. I really like the virtual channels feature. I have Cheers, Night Court, and Becker channels. Then I have my entire movie library playing like an old school HBO. I may get an HD Home Run and add OTA channels too. 📺
I never thought I’d be someone that roots for the Texas Rangers but here we are. ⚾️
I hooked up an antenna to my Roku TV just to see what local channels I could pick up. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Roku has a guide for my local channels and integrates their free streaming channels with it. You can also attach a USB drive to the TV so that you can pause live TV. Neat.

Apparently spam email also changes once you hit 40. I used to get hot single women in my area emailing me all the time. Now I only get free drills and other power tools.
The toxic work environment stories about Jimmy Fallon and The Tonight Show don’t surprise me. What surprises me is that anyone would think they could still get away with this type of behavior after all the other articles done on other shows. Just be kind.

T-Mobile’s 5G is faster than my 1 Gbps plan with Spectrum.
MLS really needs to add RSS to their site. There are some writers I would read more regularly if I could subscribe. I’d even settle for integration with Apple News, which is baffling that it’s not there already.
If you’re looking for a fun Animal Crossing-style game, check out Hello Kitty Island Adventure on Apple Arcade. Hits the same notes as Animal Crossing with crafting and lots of quests and works great with an Xbox controller on the Apple TV. 🎮
RKO 281 is one of my favorite movies about Hollywood despite only seeing Citizen Kane once back in a high school film class. I think it’s time to give Citizen Kane another viewing. 🍿

People make fun of recipe sites for telling you the entire history of each ingredient and the chef before the actual recipe. Entertainment sites are just as bad. Want to find out if there is a post-credit scene in a movie? Prepare to read the entire history of cinema before they tell you.
I loved Jason Snell’s article on how the iMac saved Apple. I never had one of those iMacs, but I wanted one. My first Mac was the white plastic Macbook. I was too cheap to shell out another $50 for the black one.
I have the new Xbox dashboard. In order to use the new background feature, where it puts game art as the background, you have to set your background back to the default and then it will work.

Oceanhorn 2 is a fun little Zelda-style game that just came out on the Xbox.

My dog has been itchy all summer. He even broke open his skin and caused an infection on his shoulder that is still healing 3 months later. The only thing that seems to help (to some extent) are pills that cost $81 for a 30 day supply and he’s itchy as soon as they run out. Time for a new vet?

Growing up a Cardinals fan in St. Louis meant Mike Shannon was the soundtrack to your summer. So sad to hear about his passing. A baseball and St. Louis legend.
The Springfield Cardinals will wear Springfield Cashew Chickens gear. You better believe I bought a hat.
Reporting for Jury Duty: Do yourself a favor and check out Jury Duty on FreeVee. It’s really good. From Wikipedia: The series chronicles the inner workings of a jury trial in the US through the eyes of juror Ronald Gladden, a solar contractor from San Diego, who is unaware that his jury duty summons was not official, and …
I grew up during peak cable TV, before channel drift took hold, so this video about why cable TV networks are all the same now was a fascinating watch.
I already use Proton’s services, so I’m excited to hear about the beta launch of Proton Pass.
Who could have predicted the St. Louis Cardinals would have a pitching problem this year? NARRATOR: Everyone. Everyone could have predicted it.
Received a standing desk for my birthday and I purchased an adjustable stand for my iPad. Enjoying the new setup.
Taking Play for a spin to manage video content I want to watch later. I love how simple and beautiful the app is. This will come in handy to track videos on YouTube I want to watch eventually.
The documentary about Rick Ankiel from MLB, Truth Be Told: Rick Ankiel, is so good.
Major League umpires are trash.
I was browsing the Mac App Store and found Essayist, which looks like a really well-designed app. I have no use for this now, but I would have loved this in college. It would have saved me so much time as a History major.
The City Rising series on St. Louis City SC’s YouTube is great. It’s a really well-produced docuseries about building St. Louis City SC the club and the team.
I love that the random, weird internet is making a comeback.
It seems like whenever I decide to turn on The Twilight Zone while I’m “flipping” through channels, I come across an episode I’ve never seen, despite owning the series on DVD and digitally and watching the New Years marathon every year.
The St. Louis Blues are a embarrassing hockey team. Not because they didn’t make the playoffs this year, though that’s pretty embarrassing, but not nearly as embarrassing as the cowardice shown here. Such a disappointment.
For the first time in years I’m using MLB.tv (thanks to it being free with my cellular provider). They have really improved the interface. I love access to documentaries too.

Gmail is getting really bad at spam recognition. They used to be the best but I guess spammers have learned Google’s techniques. I get 2-3 spam emails in my inbox each week now. I never used to get any.
Saved by the ChatGPT: I asked ChatGPT to write a Saved by the Bell episode. The results are pretty great. Unfortunately, all the teachers hate him and refuse to write him one. When the …
The Tale of Jenny and Screech: I’ve been fascinated by a new (to me) artist named Ren after his genius Hi Ren video. I didn’t think he would be able to top that song’s storytelling, but I was wrong. Before Hi Ren, he had a three song trilogy, The Tale of Jenny and Screech and it is just as good. He is such a good storyteller and …
Live activities in the MLB app are pretty cool.
The Home tab of YouTube keeps recommending the same videos I’ve already watched over and over. It’s like it is not remembering what I’ve seen, but they show up in my history, so it knows I’ve watched them. Going on for weeks now, making YouTube incredibly less useful. Time to …
Harrison Ford has been excellent in Shrinking, but the scene between him and his daughter in episode 7 was so damn good. A punch in the gut.
Hi Ren: There were no real winners and no real losers in psychological warfare. But there were victims. And there were students… Sometimes an artist, a video, the music, and the lyrics come together to create a perfect piece of art. Hi Ren did just that.
Wasn’t expecting this.
Happy De La Soul day.

Pedro Pascal being on The Mandalorian and The Last Of Us at the same time is exactly like when Ed McMahon was on Star Search and TV’s Bloopers & Practical jokes. Two phenomenal careers! - Andy Daly I love Andy Daly’s humor so much.
Apple isn’t making it easy to figure out how to watch a full MLS game that has already been played instead of the recap. Hint: if you scroll down to the How to Watch section of the match it’ll give you an option to watch full or recap.
Joey Votto annotates his own oral history. If you’re a baseball fan and don’t like Joey Votto, something is wrong with you.
St. Louis City SC needs to up their web/media presence. It’s Monday and they have no highlights from their first game (and win) on their web site. Nothing on their YouTube channel. What is going on? MLB teams update as the games progress with highlights. MLS needs to do better.
I was getting ready to post a reminder that De La Soul’s albums will be available on streaming for the first time next week and saw the news that Trugoy the Dove died. So sad.
Proton has referrals now. That’s nice. If you’re looking for secure mail or a fast VPN, Proton is the way to go.

My experiment with using the stock iOS weather app has come to an end. The radar map rarely works. Back to Carrot.
I hate when Apple does this shit. A badge in the settings app that can’t be dismissed.
I’m just now getting around to listening to Snarky Puppy’s album Empire Central. I’m mad at myself for waiting so long. 🎵
Tim McCarver Dies at 81: Tim McCarver, a two-time World Series champion who became a household name as a highly skilled broadcaster both nationally and in three Major League cities, died on Thursday at the age of 81. - MLB Tim McCarver drove a lot of Cardinals fans nuts, but we still had love for him. Rest in peace.
T-Mobile is offering MLS Season Pass to subscribers. It’s a shame I already subscribed. I wonder if I can get it applied retroactively.
I cannot wait for the third season of Ted Lasso. It begins March 15 and Apple has released a teaser.
The extra-innings rule in baseball is one of the worst things to happen to the sport rules-wise in recent memory and it looks like it’s here to stay.
A Couple of Podcast Recommendations: Two of my favorite comedy podcasts that I’ve grown to love over the past couple of years are Off Menu and Films to Be Buried With with Brett Goldstein. TIL about Morganna. How have I never heard of her before?
I was walking the dog in cold weather and didn’t want to take my gloves off to start a podcast from the beginning in Overcast. First time I tried asking Siri to “start the podcast over” and was shocked to find out it worked flawlessly.
I hate living in Missouri. Ballot candy will work for GOP voters because they are frightened racists afraid of whatever Fox tells them to be afraid of this week.
Now listening to the album Mezzanine by Massive Attack 🎵 I forgot how great this album is.
I just love how my work calendar keeps switching colors in the Calendar app on iOS and the Apple Watch complication. Just does it on its own.
So Long Netflix: I’ve been a Netflix subscriber since 2012 and that is coming to an end. Let’s be honest, this was a long time coming. A while back they decided on a business plan of quanitity over quality with their originals, have cut back on back catalogue spending, and cancel series before they are …
If this impacts people who get Netflix through their phone carrier on a family plan, I’m out. You don’t have to all live in the same house to have a family plan. What difference does it make as long as you’re not going over your simultaneous screen limit?
MLS Season Pass is now live. I’ve already subscribed. Can’t wait for St. Louis City SC! ⚽️
January 2023
I watched the first two episodes of Shrinking and love it. Can’t wait to see the rest. 📺
I constantly have ideas for longer posts but never feel like writing them. I need to make longer posts a more regular thing.
Meta is allowing Trump back on Facebook and Instagram which means I will finally delete my Instagram account.
The makers of Tweetbot, my favorite Twitter client, are back with Ivory, a great Mastodon client.
I finally boarded the Wednesday hype train. It’s as good as they say. I’m on my fourth episode. 📺
Happy birthday dad!
Today may be National Good Day day.
In Memory of Tweetbot, my favorite Twitter app. It was such a great app. The standard for Twitter apps, in my opinion. Ivory, their Mastodon client, is made with the same love and care. I can’t wait to buy it.
Listening to some David Crosby today. 🎵
St. Louis has a professional pickle ball team now.
I’m watching the new Night Court. This would have been so much better if Harry Anderson was still around. He was so great in Night Court, and everything else he was in. 📺
The number and the price of subscriptions is getting to be too much. Cancelling some subscriptions that have free alternatives. Fantastical and Carrot Weather were the first two apps to go. Still debating on Youtube Premium (I use it enough it may be worth it to keep).
This is such a great tasting hot sauce. It’s very hot, but has a great flavor.
I’ve been watching The Horne Section TV Show over the past couple of days. I love how stupid and absurd it is. 📺
For those that missed the news, all 6 of De La Soul’s albums will be available to stream starting March 3, 2023. 🎵
I’m looking for an alternative to Hyperdock that is actually being updated. I’m testing out DockView but am open to suggestions.
I think I’m switching to Firefox as my default browser for a while. I was using Edge. We’ll see how long this lasts.
I just remembered that we are getting a bunch of holidays added to our PTO calendar this year and the first one is this Monday for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
I’m so happy Ke Huy Quan is getting the recognition he deserves.
Why was Roman concrete so durable? Researchers have reverse-engineered it to explain why. Fascinating.
It really feels like the same executives that were in charge of and ruined network TV are doing the same to streaming. It was good while it lasted.
I really wonder why my phone was uploading data to Instagram while I was sleeping. It may be time to finally delete the app.

I was just told about this tool that allows you to log in with your Stitcher Premium credentials to generate a private RSS feed for any premium podcast that you can then use in apps outside of Stitcher. Pretty cool.
I’ve had my Quest 2 for a couple of years now. I don’t really play games on it. I like VR experiences more, and you can’t get any better than any of the space documentaries from Felix & Paul Studios.
I think it might be time to go through the archives and listen to my favorite episodes of Doug Loves Movies.

I love a bit of History drama.
I’m bored because it’s too cold to go out so I created a shortcut that quickly gets the time and prompts me for text to log when my heat goes on and off. Just curious to see how often it runs in this cold.
I scream you scream, we all scream ‘Puttin' on the Ritz.’ There’s some cool songs, books, and movies entering the public domain this year.
This story about two different Hallmark Christmas movies being made from the same footage is pretty wild.
Why the Super Rich are Inevitable Why do super rich people exist in a society? Many of us assume it’s because some people make better financial decisions. But what if this isn’t true? What if the economy – our economy – is designed to create a few super rich people?

One of these days I’ll get on the Ivory beta. To be honest, I’m more concerned about getting a Mac desktop app. MetaText on iOS has been working fine for iPhone. There’s nothing good for the Mac.

In case you ever run into the issue where the calendar color on your Apple Watch doesn’t match what you have set in the Calendar app, the instructions in this Reddit post resolved it for me.
Since I moved away from Eero last Thursday, I haven’t had one “hub not responding” or offline issue when leaving home nor has my Harmony Hub gone offline once (it’d do it 15-20 times a day with the Eero). I should have done this a long time ago.
YouTube Apple TV app causing issues. My parents ran into this on Friday on their Apple TVs.
I’m a sucker for actors interviewing other actors, but this one with Viola Davis and Jennifer Lawrence floored me. Viola Davis is so good.
I’m officially off of Eero. Went with a TP-Link in access point mode. WiFi Speedtest already show improved speeds. Coverage seems great so far too.
Sleep Baseball is an absolute genius idea. ⚾️ Thanks skoobz for pointing it out.
I’m looking for recommendations for a WiFi 6 router/access point that won’t break the bank. Anybody have good experiences with one they’d recommend? Do not suggest Eero, please.
A good coworker is leaving this week. It’s always a bummer when your work friends leave.

How are the NHL games on the Xbox? It’s been a long time since I’ve played a hockey video game. 🎮
I’m looking for a potential replacement for Fantastical. They are raising their subscription prices and unfortunately I think they are now priced too high for the features I use. The main feature I’ll miss from them the most is the natural language processing for event entry.

This is why I haven’t checked out Feedland. I left Twitter for very real reasons. Having that as the only way to authenticate ensures I won’t ever use it (as long as Musk or any other RWNJ owns Twitter).
If you enjoy lists and music, check out the 50 worst decisions made in music history according to Rolling Stone.
I never watched the Star Trek television shows, but this database of commercial chairs used on the show is fascinating.
I’m enjoying my new Xbox, but I have to wonder how Microsoft thought it was okay to ship a console with a controller that uses AA batteries in 2022. My PS3 had rechargeable controllers. 🎮
I’m happy with my top 10 played albums. 🎵
This is not a surprise to me. 🎵
I’ve never had to contact Nintendo customer support before. Today was the first time. I hope to never have to do it again. It’s amazing that these billion dollar companies are so bad at so many things.
With the Black Friday deals and a good trade-in value on an unused Switch, I got my first ever XBox and for relatively cheap. I got the series S since I really don’t play AAA games and I’m already almost all digital on the Switch.
Donut County is on sale for the Switch right now. This game is fun and has an incredible soundtrack. 🎮
iOS is doing the thing where when I take off my AirPods audio just starts playing out of the iPhone speaker automatically. Only a reboot fixes it.
Performance on the Switch is so bad. I’m not talking about games. Just navigating around the system is so slow.
Arc really needs bookmarklet support for me to use it more than just casually. Hopefully they pan on adding it.
This is hilarious. Goncharov is a Martin Scorsese film starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Gene Hackman, Harvey Keitel, and Cybill Shepard that doesn’t exist. The Tumblr tag will take you down the rabbit hole.
Pretty smart to have a Team Coco SiriusXM channel. I enjoy having an episode of Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend on when I hop in the car for a short drive and don’t feel like plugging in my phone.
Dance like your dog is watching.
Taylor Swift released the weakest statement she could. If I was one of her die-hard fans burned by the Ticketmaster fiasco, I’d be insulted.
The simple blogging engines that have come about recently are really interesting. Blot uses Dropbox to sync files as blog posts. Montaigne uses the Notes app.
I cannot wait for the hell to rain down on Ticketmaster from Swifties. They will get Congress to investigate Ticketmaster. They have to be afraid right now.
What is the better next-gen console at this point? Xbox Series X or PS5? 🎮
I know I’m not Taylor Swift’s target demographic, but it wouldn’t kill her to have some more merch geared towards men. All I’m asking for is a men’s baseball cap.
I wish Reeder had a way to easily manage subscriptions synced with iCloud. I’d like to delete everything and start fresh but there doesn’t seem to be a way to do this. Even removing the iCloud account doesn’t delete the feeds saved in iCloud.

One of my favorite podcasts, Threedom, returns this week. I’m so excited.
I cancelled my Eero Secure subscription a couple of months ago when they announced they were forcing everyone to the $9.99 a month plan. I just now got the email notification confirming the cancellation (it’s not because the plan ended, it’s active until next year).
Trying out a new feed reading workflow. Using iCloud with NetNewsWire instead of Feedbin and Reeder. I like it so far. Feed refreshing seems quick. I’d like to get rid of one of my yearly subscriptions and this might just do it.
It’s finally cold enough to wear the ATP Chicken Hat. It’s quite warm.
Kevin Conroy was one of the best, if not the best, actors to play Batman. RIP.
I went for a walk with the dog at lunch and was thanked with a bee(?) sting to the neck. Awesome.
I’m pretty sure the latest update to DuckDuckGo browser for iOS has a memory leak. Opening more than 2-3 tabs slows the browser to a crawl before it eventually crashes.
Played my usual game of writing my name in for various Judge positions. I switched it up this year though. My sisters were also named write-in candidates for Judge.
I don’t know when Apple thought it would be okay to start sending me NFL notifications from the TV app despite me not following any NFL teams but they just lost their notification privileges.
I really love that I can follow and interact with Mastodon users on Micro.blog.
I need to figure out a way to post the album I’m currently listening to, album art, and link to Apple Music quickly. Maybe I’ll try to figure out Shortcuts again.

What’s the best, but relatively inexpensive, Plex server? Currently, I’m using a 2012 Mac Mini that I think is on its last leg and I really don’t want to replace it with another computer that is only really a Plex/file server.
I eventually need to update my license (mine still isn’t Real ID certified) and I’m dreading it. It expires in about 5 months.
Weird seeing a bunch of tech people who normally dislike Musk become Musk-defenders now that he owns Twitter and they don’t want to leave. So much excuse-making.
This was a feast for him. He had never seen a bone that big, especially a real one. No, he did not eat the whole thing.
Network admins are magicians, I’m convinced.
I really couldn’t figure out how Stage Manager could work with my workflow on the Mac. I don’t think it can. I’m a heavy Spaces user. I do like it on the iPad so far though.

Happy Midnights Day to all that celebrate. 🎵
I’m going to keep complaining about this. Report Junk and Delete should be two separate actions in messages in iOS 16. I shouldn’t be forced to say whether something is junk upon deletion. What a horrible design.
BetterTouchTool updated and put their own menu bar over Apple’s by default. Not cool at all. I had no idea what was going on or how to remove it until I dug into preferences.
The images of the Pillars of Creation from the James Webb Space Telescope are amazing. The slider tool to compare Hubble and Webb is pretty remarkable.
The wifi on my Eeros went from around 290-300 Mbps to 400+ Mbps after setting the Eero to bridge mode. I should have dumped Secure and done this a long time ago.
I took a gamble setting up my new Firewalla at lunch knowing that if my network went down and I couldn’t get it back up I’d be screwed for work this afternoon. Whole thing done in 15 mins with only one issue (had to reboot the modem after plugging in the Firewalla). So easy.

I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it: It’s such a shame that Peacock cancelled Saved by the Bell. The reboot was so clever.
I bought L.A. Noire on the Switch when it was on sale a long time ago. Never played it, but I did play it on my old PS3, which is in a closet somewhere. I forgot how much I love the aesthetic of that game. 🎮
It’s been a couple of days and I still can’t stop thinking about Clerks III. I think part of it has to do with me turning 40 next April. Never thought a Kevin Smith film would impact me this much.
Testing out the Drafts action.
My new Firewalla gets delivered this week. I’m excited to nerd out and play around with it.
Video games need a recap mode that takes you through what you last did on a game if you haven’t played it in more than a week. It should be standard on all games.
Interesting to no one but me: I noticed Carrot Weather started offering Apple Weather as a data source. Going to try it out for a bit to see how accurate it is.
Looking forward to Blues hockey tonight. Seems like last season was a decade ago. LGB!
I really enjoyed Clerks III. Kevin Smith made a movie that is so full of heart and plenty of laughs and nostalgia.
Clerks III time. 🍿
There are some really neat features in Arc. I think I may have to live with it as my default browser for a while.
Even with the redesign, the Prime video iOS app is garbage. I don’t know if it has one redeeming feature. X-Ray maybe? But even that gets triggered on accident too much.
Am I the only one that accidentally reports legit texts as junk when deleting them on iOS 16? I’ve done it multiple times on accident. There’s got to be a better interaction for this. Have no idea how to undo. Hope those numbers weren’t important.
These Meta stories get weirder and weirder and I’m loving it. I really do wish nothing but the worst for that company.
I don’t know if I like the new video controls on iOS 16. I seem to accidentally drag the video forwards or backwards a few seconds every time I touch the iPad screen to pause. Not at the bottom of the video. In the middle of the screen.

People are surprised that Mario sounds exactly like Chris Pratt as if Chris Pratt doesn’t play Chris Pratt in everything he’s in. That’s all he knows how to do.
I love that Five Below carries candy brands you haven’t seen in years. I haven’t had this since 7th grade, and even then it was hard to come by.
Sounds like my Playdate will ship soon. I hope I get it this month.
My dog just had cheese stuck on the inside of his cone. You ever see someone try to bite their own ear? That’s what it looked like when he tried licking the cheese off.
Just discovered filters on micro.blog and that’s a cool little feature.
I’m really intrigued by No Man’s Sky coming to the Switch. Especially the new casual mode where you can dial down the survival aspects. I just want to fly and explore planets. May have to pick this one up.

I have tears in my eyes. Albert Pujols is amazing. ⚾️
I don’t think it will hit me fully until Spring Training next year, but it will be really weird to have Cardinals baseball without Yadier Molina. He’s been a Cardinal for half my life.

There’s a Stranger Things ripoff game in the Switch eshop called Unusual Findings and that’s hilarious.

One of the frustrating things about the Apple ecosystem is they want people in the ecosystem but then don’t develop and nurture it. Make your own HomeKit devices and health accessories besides the Apple Watch. 3rd party has failed Apple in many aspects.

I haven’t watched the 1960s Batman since I was a kid. I kind of want to revisit as an adult now that I understand camp. It’s not streaming anywhere, but I can purchase the episodes digitally. The question is, should I?
Pay for play comes to podcasts. So gross, but knowing the companies involved, not at all surprising.
I love that it’s finally fall in St. Louis. My sinuses on the other hand…
Every few months I get the urge to rewatch ER, then I remember it’s like a million seasons long and there like 10 seasons in the middle where it kinda sucks before getting good again at the end.
My brain wants me to be both a night owl and an early morning person. This leads to a lot of waking up at 3AM and staying awake.
I hope the Cardinals’ pitching and offense sort things out soon. Time is running out.
The first season of Rings of Power reminds me a lot of the early seasons of Game of Thrones. Each episode is a reminder of an epic story that’s taking place but very little happens to progress the story.

Update: I killed the fly. Spike still thinks he hears it buzzing around and won’t calm down.
My dog is absolutely terrified of flies and there is one in the house somewhere. It’s going to be a long night.
I don’t know why exactly the internet seems to hate Rings of Power (but since it’s the internet, I’m willing to guess racism and sexism) but I really enjoyed the first two episodes. I can’t wait for more. 📺
You can always tell when a major new iOS update is about to drop because you’ll have like 30 apps with updates each day right before it is released.
Tried importing some .epub files into my kindle using the iOS app and the email method and they failed each time. Added the same files to iCloud and they opened in the Books app without issue. Amazon sucks.

The startup Decide Technologies (formerly LockerDome), that had a lot of shine in the St. Louis region, has been funding and profiting off the alt-right. Disgusting.
It’s weird that I, as a child of the ’80s and ’90s, have ’50s nostalgia. Oh yeah, all the TV shows and movies I watched as a kid were written by middle-aged men with actual ’50s nostalgia.
That giant deal the Cardinals made with Bally’s (then Fox Sports Midwest) does not look so good with another selloff attempt and fears of bankruptcy. Not good for the Blues either.

I’m in Group 3 for my Playdate. At this point it feels like a lot of the charm and excitement has faded and that has certainly made me less excited for it. So much so I’ve even considered cancelling my order.
The Restaurant: I don’t remember the first time I went to The Restaurant. That’s what we called the Bissell Mansion Restaurant and Dinner Theatre when I was growing up. If you’re unfamiliar with the establishment, it was a restaurant located inside what is considered the oldest, still-standing …
The Cardinals have a day off today and then play 27 straight games, including a double-header before their next day off. The next month is going to be rough.
I’ve seen episodes of The Simpsons but never sat down and watched an entire season. Should I start a binge of a show that has aired for 33 seasons?

First time I’ve not had my dog on my lock screen. It feels weird, but I really like this one currently.

What is going on over at WarnerBros/Discovery/HBOMax? This new leadership team seems pretty awful.
My dog wagging his tail as soon as he realizes I’m looking at him brings me such joy.
My phone has restarted each night while I slept since installing the latest public beta of iOS16. Submitted a crash report this morning but I have no idea what caused the restart since I was sleeping at the time. Good thing it came back up because it’s also my alarm.
I’m sad to see Bader go. He was a fun Cardinal. I think this is a good trade for the team though. Good luck in NY.
The Batgirl movie has been cancelled. That’s really strange considering they spent $90 million on it. I really don’t understand this.
FYI, if you’re thinking about trying the public betas of iPadOS but you also use the PeacockTV app, it crashes upon launch right now so you may want to hold off if it’s important to you.
I love the new Now Playing screen and the timer control in iOS 16.
Time to jump on the public beta train. iOS and iPad OS downloading now.
What a wonderful tribute to Bill Russell by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Every streaming service should allow you to browse by decade.
Another reminder of why I’m no longer a fan of the NFL and do not watch any games.
July 2022
I guess I’ll listen to this Beyonce album that everyone is talking about. This will be my first Beyonce album.
It sure would be nice if Apple hired some developers who knew what they were doing to work on their Airplay and bluetooth audio crap. So annoying how often I have issues playing audio from my phone to HomePods or AirPods.
I miss the shows from the blue sky TV era. Monk, Psych, White Collar, Eureka, Warehouse 13 were silly, fun shows that were the best comfort TV.
Someone needs to do a 12 part podcast series on whatever happened to Powder, the white rapper from Ghetto Cowboy, who, from as far as I can tell, never appeared on anything else besides this song.
I love that even in the alternate history universe of For All Mankind A Tribe Called Quest exists.

So many 90s sitcoms had 1950s themed episodes or locales because the writers rooms were filled with middle-aged white dudes nostalgic for the past. Boy Meets World, Saved by the Bell, 90210, Step by Step.
Nostalgia is a drug and I’m addicted. Adding Pod Meets World to my podcast subscriptions.

HBO had some great original movies back in the day. Loved The Rat Pack, but my favorite was RKO281, which you may be able to find on a used DVD if you’re lucky.
“Brave”
Switched one of my domain’s email to Proton now that I have the upgraded mail service. They really do make it simple to switch.
My favorite movie with Ray Liotta will always be Field of Dreams. Goodfellas is a very close second. 🍿
Network of Cities and Towns Revealed by Lidar: I love how much there is to still learn about past civilizations and how much there is more to discover. An airborne lidar survey recently revealed the long-hidden ruins of 11 pre-Columbian Indigenous towns in what is now northern Bolivia. The survey also revealed previously unseen details of …
I’m pretty sure Universal Control has gotten worse in the latest iPadOS update. There have been so many times where I can’t get the curser back to my Mac without violently shaking my mouse so that it, hopefully and eventually, gets to where I need it.
Now that Proton plans are more reasonable and email is included with the VPN subscription, I may have to move away from Fastmail. If Apple releases a password app this fall, I think that will solidify the move as I will no longer need 1Password or their (poor) Fastmail integration.
Holy cow. I’m loving the new Proton plans. My VPN plan now gives me so much more access for email, including custom domains.
I can put my dog in a trance by scratching behind his ears. He’ll be completely still while I scratch. As soon as I’m done, I mean as soon, all that stored energy is released in zoomies.
The only thing getting me through this long day is knowing that this is a short week.
I’m trying to stay positive about the Blues but after that game it’s really hard. 🏒
There needs to be a YouTube channel that just shows dogs going to the beach for the first time.
Paul F. Tompkins is a national treasure.
A duck decided to take a swim before the pool opens.
I think I could watch Ethan Hawke talk about art for hours upon hours and not get bored. His passion for what he does is infectious.
The American version of Would I Lie to You is pretty good.
Sometimes, especially when listening to ATP, I think tech geeks create problems for themselves just so they have something to complain about/fix.
Apparently the US version of Would I Lie to You has already been airing. Totally missed that news. 📺
Some new pins for my back pack. Dem Threedom Boys.
I wonder if The Offer is any good. I love the Godfather films so I’m intrigued. Not sure if I want to sign up for Paramount+ again. 📺
I can already tell it’s going to be a long day.
It’s pretty stupid that even with premium you still can’t do picture in picture on YouTube. I’ll probably cancel after my premium trial ends because of this.
Oh no, I found a new YouTube rabbit hole: Disc Golf Pro Tour.
I haven’t watched The Drew Carey Show since it originally aired. I’d like to revisit it but you can’t find it for streaming or purchase (digitally).
MLB has a serious umpiring problem. ⚾️
Another iris.
Some baby birds in a nest on my neighbor’s wreath.
Currently listening to Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers 🎵
Have to restart iPhone because AirPods will connect but no audio will play to them. So, basically, a normal day.
Good morning.
I really need to sit down and figure out how to use Halide. I’ve paid for it and haven’t used it because I have no idea what the settings on the screen do.
TFW you look at your dog and his tail starts wagging because he noticed you’re looking at him.
I want to do something that I think is impossible. I want to disable notifications in Fantastical for 1 calendar on 1 device (I don’t need notifications for work appts on my work computer because Outlook handles that).
Photos app is doing some weird trickery to photos where they look good in the photos app but as soon as you view it in another app the image looks all blown out and too bright. Weird.
This afternoon’s listening is Townland’s Honey on the Hi-Fi. 🎵
My sister may have to put down her 16 year old dog today. That’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. So sad.
Morning flowers
The era of streaming services having great niche shows is coming to an end. Companies are turning streaming into broadcast TV for “water cooler” moments.
I don’t know the type of flower, but the color is pretty.
I will never get tired of Seinfeld. It’s always a solid go to for comfort TV for me.
Is there a way to insert alt text on an image in Gluon?
This random football card was wedged in the wood near a dumpster.
My Apple Watch wouldn’t let me swipe down for notifications until I rebooted the watch. Weird.
Shining Girls has a really good pilot. Honestly, almost all the really great shows are on Apple TV+. 📺
I just finished Hacks. I know I’m late to the party on it. Such a good show with great performances by everyone. 📺
This little guy tried sneaking into my parents’ garage while I was mowing their lawn.
This was a week. That’s all I’ll say.
My dog decided to go back to bed while I’m in the other room working. I don’t blame him. It’s chilly and rainy. Perfect day for sleeping in.
Outlook on the Mac keeps removing draft emails, but I can log into Outlook web and see them. They will eventually sync back to the Mac, but something is definitely going on with the sync service. Two days in a row this has happened to me now.
ReadKit looks like an interesting app. I currently use Reeder, but love to try out new apps.
If the Saved by the Bell reboot was on Netflix instead of Peacock it would have gotten cancelled after 3 seasons instead of 2.
It’s raining so much some ducks decided to make this puddle their pond.
Coming out of the shower to dog vomit on your bed is certainly one way to start the day. Not the one I would have preferred though.
The Saved by the Bell reboot on Peacock was cancelled. That’s such a shame because it was genuinely good. 📺
This afternoon’s walk music.
The past week or so has been super stressful so I’ve been listening to a lot of Threedom recently. Scott, PFT, and Lauren or so hilarious. I never want the show to end.
I’m really jealous of all the people getting playdates. I’m in group 3, so I won’t get mine until the end of the year at the earliest. 🎮
a new black star album but only available on an audiobook platform. what a great way to not get listeners!
Hey Siri, time for work. “Okay, I’ve turned the flashlight on.” Thanks, Siri. 🙄
This breakdown of the Cardinals and Mets brawl is hilarious. ⚾️
Time seems to be standing still today.
The Blues are playing The Wild in the playoffs. Both teams are in the central time zone. Yet, somehow they still get the late start times. The NHL always does this to the Blues. 🏒
I think orange might be my favorite flower color.
Spring at my mom and dad’s house.

Apparently there is a monkey inside Steak n’ Shake near Lindenwood. Pic from my sister.
I’m watching the second Venom movie despite not really liking the first. I saw a lot of positive reviews. I just don’t get it. I guess Venom just isn’t for me. 🍿
The Cardinals have a rough May. They’ll be playing a lot of games versus good teams. ⚾️
I just got around to watching Long Gone Summer. I loved it. I still remember that summer vividly. 🍿
There’s a Never Not Funny member’s only live stream tonight and I cannot wait. A great way to end a terribly long week. 🎙
My Friday is so packed. Whatever happened to Fridays being easy?
This is why I got rid of my Echos: Researchers find Amazon uses Alexa voice data to target you with ads
This Today’s Chill playlist from Apple Music is the perfect background music for concentration. 🎵
This has been a really long week and it’s not even close to being over yet.
Did some redesign work on shep.online. Changed the link color, added profile image, changed some other CSS. It’s getting there, I think.
1Password is having issues today. Unable to save new logins from the browser. Sync from the app to the browser is broken. The app is useless right now.
I have the urge to watch Deadwood again. 📺
Starting off the day with a ton of sinus pressure is always fun. It’s going to be a long one, that’s for sure. But at least there’s day baseball today.
Current Home Screen
I love Rich Eisen’s rant about Angel Hernandez. ⚾️
I was playing my Switch every day for a couple of weeks and now it’s been a week since I’ve touched it. I really need to get back into Kirby. 🎮
Returning to Micro.blog: For the last six months I’ve been debating on whether or not I would return to micro.blog. For one reason or another, I never did. After the news of Elon buying twitter broke, I decided to give it another go because my time on twitter had essentially become doomscrolling, with only a portion being …

Is there an iOS app similar to macOS’ MarsEdit that will work with micro.blog? Looking for an app that is more suited to longer posts.
I can’t wait to get my Playdate. Best Games for Sideloading on Your Playdate.
Apple TV+ is killing it with prestige titles. This looks good. The Essex Serpent 📺
I really hope the Apple TV/HomePod/sound bar rumor is true. I’d love a device like that for my living room.
The Batman: I remember the first time I saw a Batman movie. It was 1989 and Tim Burton’s Batman was literally everywhere. You could not go into a mall (remember those?) in America without seeing Batman merchandise in every window. I was 6 when my dad took me. It was unlike any other iteration of Batman I …
Currently reading Hip Hop Family Tree. 📚
I enjoyed Inside Eats with Rhett and Link on Food Network. Their charm from their YouTube show translated pretty well. 📺
I’m having fun playing around with micro.blog again. Figuring out custom templates and plugins. I now have replies shown on posts and a reply on micro.blog button.
Every time I’d launch the app store on my iPad it would crash instantly. Rebooted and the same thing still happened. Took it off the Magic Keyboard and launched it and it loaded fine. Put it back on the keyboard and still launched fine. Weird.
So it’s been a long while since I’ve logged into micro.blog. How do you modify a design’s CSS now that themes have been moved to plugins? I don’t see a way to to do it. CC @manton
Wish I was in bed still.
Reactivated my micro.blog account now that it looks like a certain megalomaniac is going to buy the bird site.

I got my brother-in-law a pillow with my face on it for Christmas. He’s ecstatic.
In case you weren’t aware, Brian McKnight has a Christmas album. You’re welcome in advance.
Finally getting around to watching For All Mankind. It is really good, but I love anything involving the space program.
At work I went from a 13 inch MacBook Pro to the new 16 inch MBP. I love the bigger screen size. It seemed huge at first but I’m loving the extra screen real estate. It’s a really nice computer.
My Apple Watch keeps running out of space. I don’t sync music, photos, or contacts. I have very few apps installed. Just started happening over the past couple of weeks. I guess it’s time for a full reset.
I started taking my iPad to meetings instead of full laptop (unless it’s a meeting where I specifically need it). It’s a great device for what I need it for and is less distracting in meetings than a laptop.
My dad made a Christmas tree shelf out of an old ladder for their Christmas village. I think it turned out really well.
I have a feeling I’ll be working from home tomorrow. Roads don’t look good and more snow coming tomorrow.
Sidecar on macOS is a blessing when you can’t connect to normal external monitors. Has been a lifesaver for me while I wait for a new computer.
I really wish my work allowed employees to bring in their dogs. Or I just need to find a job in which I play with dogs all day (and pays really well).

I’m getting a 16 inch MBP at work today. At least I hope I am. FedEx has it and it’s supposed to be delivered today.
No Hyperdock replacement suggestions yet, so I’ll rephrase for people who aren’t familiar with Hyperdock. Does anyone know of an app for macOS that allows you to preview dock items upon hover?
The new Ghostbusters movie looks so good. A mix between Stranger Things, Goonies, and Ghostbusters. Cannot wait. www.youtube.com/watch
November 2019
Siri has gotten so much worse for me in iOS 13, especially with the HomePod update. Siri never recognizes who I am. When it does work, it’s so much slower at actually performing the tasks. I may have to plug my Echos back in.
Unpopular opinion: The Sam Raimi Spider-man movies are bad. Not just the third. All of them.
The prep that is done for a colonoscopy is the worst and I never want to do it again.
Time for some health news. For a few months I was having digestive issues and was losing weight pretty quickly. Saw a GI and it was recommended that I have a colonoscopy. Colon cancer runs on both sides of my family. Test results came back and everything is ok. What a relief!
July 2019
This has been a long week and it is only the beginning of Wednesday. How is it only Wednesday?
Does anyone use the Actions and/or Timepage apps from Moleskine? They look really well-designed.
Listening to old Doug Loves Movies and Never Not Funny episodes. The LA comedy scene has changed so much in the last 5-10 years. There was something really special in the late 2000s and early teens.
I’ve had to switch to mail.app on my MBP because Outlook is completely broken for me this morning. Ugh.
Burger King’s new tacos are like Jack in the Box’s tacos, but with 100% less grease.
I saw Stuber over the weekend. It was great. My expectations weren’t high, but it was the perfect summertime distraction with really funny moments and great action. Great cast as well.
I just discovered the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra & St. Louis Symphony Orchestra album Wynton Marsalis’ Swing Symphony. What a good album.
I’m loving this album.

I can’t wait for the sign in with Apple stuff. This was a really exciting keynote for non-devs.

The new album Future Dust by The Amazons is really good. I’v never listened to this band before. I love discovering new music in Apple Music.
